Maher: ‘College is a racket’

College “is a racket that sells you a very expensive ticket to the upper middle class,” said comedian Bill Maher in a six-minute monologue.

Biden is asking “taxpayers to pony up hundreds of billions so that everyone can go to college,” Maher said.

I know free college is a left-wing thing, but is it really liberal for someone who doesn’t go to college and makes less money to pay for people who do go and make more? Especially since colleges have turned into giant luxury daycare centers with overpaid babysitters anxious to indulge every student whim.

“China is kicking our ass . . . because in 2019, we issued more undergrad degrees in visual and performing arts than in computer and information science or math,” Maher said.

College is a competition for status and wealth, writes Daniel Markovits, a Yale Law professor, in The Atlantic. It’s not about learning.

The competition starts at birth for parents determined to get little Aidan or Emma into the Ivy League, he writes. It is “important to attend highly selective elementary and even preschools” to qualify for “elite high schools that enormously improve the odds” of getting into elite colleges. Educated, well-to-do parents have a huge advantage.
