Democrats must choose: Abortion extremism or gender delusions

Democrats introduced a bill this week that would have radically expanded access to abortion up until the point of birth and nullified restrictions to that access in pro-life states. Noticeably missing from the bill’s text , however, was one key word: woman.

The text of the legislation, which is still called the Women’s Health Protection Act, originally stated that its purpose was to “protect a woman’s ability to determine whether and when to bear a child or end a pregnancy, and to protect a healthcare provider’s ability to provide reproductive health care services, including abortion services.” A revised version of the bill replaces “woman” with “a person”:

They kept “women” in the title but since 2019 changed the text of bill: “woman’s” right to abortion is now a “person’s” right to abortion https://t.co/RsPfQhKLeF pic.twitter.com/0tGYYABI87

If the bill’s extreme position on abortion wasn’t proof enough that Democrats have wandered into the realm of political absurdity, this subtle erasure of the female identity should confirm it. A “person” doesn’t get pregnant; a woman does. A “person” doesn’t undergo an abortive procedure; a woman does.

It does Democrats no good to deny this biological reality. In fact, their embrace of gender ideology only hurts their cause. Part of the reason the pro-choice movement’s messaging has been so successful over the years is because it framed the issue of abortion through the lens of feminism. Politicians who opposed abortion were accused of obstructing a woman’s “right” to choose and exerting their own will over her body. Even the Supreme Court’s opinion in Roe v. Wade used this angle, arguing that laws criminalizing abortion placed an undue burden on a “woman’s right” to abortion.

Remove the female identity from the pro-choice argument and it loses the one thing that makes it somewhat human. It also loses its potency. The allegation that pro-life laws are really just male-driven efforts to control and suppress women doesn’t stick when women can’t be called women and people who are not actually women get to pretend that they are. It is impossible to fight for “women’s rights” while also denying their very existence.

But far be it from me to give the pro-choice movement advice. I’m glad the bill failed , and I’m glad Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer forced Democrats to tie themselves to the most extreme position on abortion possible. I’m sure the 71% of voters who support restricting abortion would agree. But this ridiculous gender delusion has to end. It’s an insult to all women — no matter their position on abortion.
